A cancer diagnosis can be overwhelming and scary. You want to know the extent of the disease and what your options are for treatment. A PET/CT scan (positron emission tomography and computerized tomography) can assist your healthcare provider in finding answers relative to the extent of the disease and treatment options.
A combined PET/CT scan is the latest, most advanced whole-body imaging technology used to diagnose and stage cancer. The scan combines PET imaging to detect actively growing cancer cells and CT imaging to provide a detailed picture of the inside of the body. CT scans utilize many X-ray images from different angles and cross-sections to create a complete picture with much more detail than a traditional X-ray. PET imaging utilizes trace amounts of radioactive materials to evaluate a potential condition.
PET/CT imaging services for North Oaks Health System patients are provided at Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center, conveniently located on North Oaks Medical Center’s campus in Hammond. The interpretation of the scan is then completed by board-certified radiologists.
