Physiatrist Thien Ninh, MD, Joins North Oaks Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation Clinic

Physiatrist Thien Ninh, MD, has joined North Oaks Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation Clinic in Hammond and is accepting new patients, ages 18 and older. To schedule an appointment with Dr. Ninh, call 985-230-2778.

Dr. Ninh is trained in physical medicine and rehabilitation, which involves the prevention, and non-surgical diagnosis and treatment of illnesses or injuries affecting movement like common musculoskeletal issues such as shoulder, knee and hip pain. Individuals who have experienced a stroke, neck/back pain or brain/spinal cord injuries, as well as those diagnosed with arthritis, cancer or carpal tunnel syndrome, also may benefit from his care. Within the physiatry field, Dr. Ninh takes a special interest in regenerative medicine.

Dr. Ninh comes to North Oaks from The Institute of Rehabilitation and Research (TIRR) at Memorial Hermann in Houston where he completed a physical medicine and rehabilitation residency through Baylor College of Medicine in June. TIRR is one of six designated model rehabilitation systems nationwide. As a model system, TIRR enables residents to manage patients through the full continuum of rehabilitative care for both traumatic brain and spinal cord injuries – from emergency services through medical rehabilitation and reentry into community life.

“My TIRR training has given me invaluable experience caring for patients who have endured some of the most complex brain and spinal cord injuries,” Dr. Ninh asserts.

Originally from Slidell, Dr. Ninh was drawn to physiatry because of the medical specialty’s values and goals.

“I view physiatry as a medical field that focuses on helping patients return to the activities that they love to do and, ultimately, improve their quality of life. The scope of practice can range from helping a weekend warrior overcome a minor injury to helping someone with a complex spinal cord injury regain as much functional independence as possible,” Dr. Ninh explains. “By ensuring my patients understand their treatment options and respecting their preferences, I am best able to help them achieve their goals. In my experience, I find that rehabilitation works best when my patients are self-motivated and actively engaged in their treatment regimen.”

Dr. Ninh graduated concurrently from the Tulane University School of Medicine in New Orleans with his medical degree and the Tulane University Freeman School of Business with a master’s degree in business administration. He also completed his internship in internal medicine through Tulane.

During his undergraduate years at Tulane, he earned bachelor’s degrees in neuroscience and economics and distinguished himself as a fellow of the National Collegiate Inventors and Innovators Alliance and president of Tulane’s chapter of Habitat for Humanity for 3 years. He also co-founded the eye clinic for Luke’s House. As a student leader for 2 years, he helped the Greater New Orleans area non-profit organization provide patients with free eye exams and glasses, in addition to referrals for treatment of glaucoma, cataracts and other eye health services.

Dr. Ninh will practice with Rishi Pathak, MD, and Nurse Practitioner Vyrl Traylor, GNP-BC, CRRN, at North Oaks Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation Clinic and North Oaks Rehabilitation Hospital in Hammond.

North Oaks Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation Clinic is found at 2101 Robin Avenue, Suite 11, in the Hammond Park Professional Building next to North Oaks Rehabilitation Hospital.
