Celebrate with Safety

Whether visiting a public firework show or celebrating by popping your own at home, make sure you and your family follow the necessary precautions to stay safe for the upcoming firework holidays.

According to the National Fire Protection Agency, fireworks started an estimated 19,500 fires in 2018, including 1,900 structure fires, 500 vehicle fires, and 17,100 outside and other fires. These fires caused five deaths, 46 civilian injuries and $105 million in direct property damage.

To keep your family safe and avoid becoming part of these statistics, check first to make sure it is legal in your area of residence and follow these safety tips from the Louisiana Fire Marshal's Office and the Consumer Product Safety Commission:

  • Detonate devices at least 200 feet away from structures, flammable substances, vehicles and rubbish. Avoid loose clothing, dry grass and standing above or close to lit fireworks.
  • Do not re-light fireworks that did not ignite.
  • Never allow children to light fireworks. Glow sticks are a great alternative.
  • Never operate fireworks while impaired.
  • Light devices one at a time and monitor embers that may be released.
  • Avoid trash fires by submersing fireworks, lit or not, in water before disposal. Keep a bucket of water close and know how to use a fire extinguisher properly.
  • If you are injured, avoid rubbing your eyes and visit the nearest emergency room immediately.

In the event a public display is still being offered in your area, and your family is considering attending, the Louisiana Fire Marshal's Office recommends the following COVID-19 safety measures:

  • Have every member of your household wear a face covering.
  • Bring your own seating.
  • Space your seating six feet from the nearest individual or group of individuals.
