Muscle or joint overuse injuries are common in athletes and active people. These injuries are caused a repetitive motion like throwing, serving a volleyball or swinging a hammer.
Here are 6 tips to avoid overuse injuries:
- Use proper technique when performing the motion (example: squats, pitching).
- Use properly fitted gear.
- Warm up. Don’t forget to stretch because it prepares your body and increases flexibility, which reduces the possibility of overuse injuries.
- Cool down. Don’t sit right after physical activity; instead, walk around until your heart rate adjusts back to its lower rate.
- Use the 10% rule. When you are returning to a sport/job after being off for a period of time, gradually increase physical activity by 10% per week until you reach 100%.
- Pay attention to your body. If you’re feeling pain, talk to your doctor in order to avoid injuring yourself further.
