North Oaks and 30 Community Partners Hosting Free Safety Event Oct. 24

Make plans to attend “Play It Safe,” with your family on Saturday, Oct. 24, 2015 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The free, interactive safety event is being sponsored by North Oaks Health System and will be held at Cate Square Park in Historic Downtown Hammond.

Play It Safe’s goal is to increase safety awareness among families with children, age 12 and younger, through fun-filled educational demonstrations and activities.

According to Safe Kids Worldwide, preventable injuries are the number 1 cause of death of children in the U.S. Dr. Juan Duchesne, Trauma Medical Director for North Oaks, concurs.

“Locally, our Shock Trauma and Emergency Department teams treat thousands of children each year who fall victim to preventable injuries,” he affirms.

More than 30 community partners are joining with North Oaks to make Play it Safe possible, including: Acadian Ambulance Services, American Red Cross, Alexis Ducorbier Insurance Agency, Berrytown Produce, Champagne Beverages, Chick-fil-A, Child Advocacy Services, City of Hammond, Crime Stoppers of Tangipahoa, Daily Star, Hammond Fire Department, Hammond Kiwanis Club, Hammond Police Department, Hammond Rotary Club, Hammond Westside Elementary Montessori Girl Scouts, Hug-a-Tree, GrayCat Cycle Worx, KAJUN 107.1 FM, Keys Alliance, Louisiana Children’s Discovery Center, Louisiana Wildlife & Fisheries, Natalbany Elementary School Girl Scouts, Poison Control, Raising Canes, Santa Fe Cattle Company, Small Time Skates, Subway, Sudden Impact, Tangipahoa 911, Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office and TRACC Coalition.

“Play It Safe” has been organized into “zones"—home, vehicles and sports/outdoors—where injuries are most likely to occur. A “snack zone” will offer refreshments. In addition, free bike helmets will be provided to children, age 2-12 who were pre-registered before Sunday, Oct. 11; however, registration is not required to attend the event.
